As a student in online masters in history program, it’s only natural that you have an interest in historic attractions around the world. If you’re thinking of planning the perfect trip this year that allows you to soak up some of the worlds’ finest when it comes to historic locations, then you’ll want to read on. Here we’ll take a look at the top five historic attractions worth visiting, all of which are sure to please anyone studying for a masters degree in history.
The Forum and Colosseum
It would be a challenge to find a list of top five historic attractions that doesn’t include the Forum and Colosseum in Rome, Italy. When it comes to soaking in history, this is a fabulous destination to do so. The Colosseum was built in A.D. 70-72 and was meant to be a gift for the Roman people to enjoy. It was home to all kinds of fights, combats, and games for spectators. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire world.
Taj Mahal
Here’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that isn’t just interesting to history scholars, but also to those with an interest in architecture. Construction began on the Taj Mahal in India in 1632 and it took over 20 years to build! As you look at its intricate details, it should come as no surprise it was such a long process.
Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu in Peru is a whole other kind of impressive. This one is truly a marvel that you won’t soon forget. Part of what makes it so intriguing is that it’s very difficult to access. You will need to hike for four days to reach it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is often called the “Lost City of the Incas”. It’s also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The city was built in the 15th century and was at some point abandoned. Mystery shrouds this ancient city and is one that shouldn’t be missed.
Stonehenge
If you love a little mystery tied in with your history, then Stonehenge is another that is sure to appeal to you. Wouldn’t it be great to see this fabulous structure in real life after reading and studying so much about it? Part of what makes this attraction so interesting is that it was built in a variety of stages. The first stage dates back 5,000 years ago! This World Heritage Site is found in England, among beautiful countryside and landscape.
The Pyramids at Giza
Of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Pyramids at Giza, which draws massive amounts of tourists each and every year. The Egyptians built the Pyramids more than 3,000 years ago, but how it was done is still a mystery today.
Explore History in Person
Setting out on a trip to experience one of these historic locations in person gives you a whole other appreciation for what you’ve learned in class. This is a wonderful way to take your passion for history off the pages and into real-life.
