Star Wars covers millennia: a mix of heroism, treachery, battles, and the eternal war between the light and dark sides of the Force. From its movies to series, the franchise boasts a comprehensive timeline. Whether you are a die-hard Star Wars fan or someone who’s just beginning to enter the universe and wants know-how about the saga, this article breaks down the Star Wars narratives in chronological order across movies and TV.

The High Republic Era (Series in Development)

The High Republic takes place hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga. This period covers the peak of the Jedi Order, as it remains a stationary peacekeeping force throughout much of the galaxy. While there aren’t any films in this time frame, upcoming live-action series such as The Acolyte will explore the grim end of this golden age with a return of the Sith lurking in secrecy.

The Fall of the Republic (Prequel Trilogy and The Clone Wars)

Episode I

The Star Wars timeline starts with the episode named “The Phantom Menace”. It’s the story of young slave boy Anakin Skywalker. He has exceptional Force potential recognized by a Jedi Master who brings him to the Jedi Order, and then the journey of the Chosen One begins.

On the other side, behind the political barriers, the Sith Lord named Darth Sidious was also returned. He was hidden under the veil and intended to bring down the Galactic Republic and rule the galaxy with his power and outstanding manipulative skills.

Episode II

After ten years of The Phantom Menace, the episode “Attack of the Clones” was released showcasing the tensions between the Republic and the Separatists. Moreover, in this episode, Anakin’s affection for Padmé Amidala became the seed of his downfall. Gradually, the events led to the Clone Wars, changing the entire history of the saga.

The Clone Wars (Animated Series)

This series explores the brutal conflicts and human experiences of the Clone Wars. It delves into Anakin’s path, the rise of Ahsoka Tano as his Padawan, and the tumultuous direction of the Jedi Order and its relationship with the galaxy at large. It also really hints at Anakin’s dark destiny.

Episode III

This third episode is “Revenge of the Sith”. In this, Palpatine orders the execution of Order 66 to kill all Jedi and force-sensitive beings. It also highlights Anakin’s complete fall towards the dark side and how he fully embraces the side of the Sith and becomes Darth Vader. This tragic tale sets the stage for the Empire’s dominance.

The Age of the Empire (Standalone Films, Animated Series, and Rebels)

Solo: A Star Wars Story

This details how Han encounters Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian during intergalactic criminal activities. It highlights the early stages of the smuggler’s iconic journey and his adventures.

Star Wars Rebels (Animated Series)

The series follows a small group of Rebels who stand against the Empire. It is set between the prequels and the original trilogy, following Jedi survivor Kanan Jarrus and Force-sensitive teenager Ezra Bridger.

Rogue One

This standalone film is a Star Wars Story that takes place after A New Hope and details how the Rebel spies came to steal the Death Star plans. It celebrates those who flew under the radar, whose sacrifice paved the way for the Rebellion’s first victory against the Empire.

The Galactic Civil War (Original Trilogy)

Episode IV

“A New Hope” introduces Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. It is considered a turning point in the saga, as in this episode, the Rebel Alliance delivers a major blow to the Empire by destroying the first Death Star. It’s a story of hope, redemption, and heroism.

Episode V

In this episode “The Empire Strikes Back”, Yoda trains Luke in the ways of the Force, and Luke confronts the harrowing truth that Darth Vader is his father. In The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo is also captured, and the Empire tightens its grip.

Episode VI

Episode sixth is Return of the Jedi and The original trilogy ends with it. It reflects the destruction of the second Death Star and Emperor Palpatine. It is the moment of redemption for Darth Vader, and he also destroyed Darth Sidious to save his son and fulfill his destiny as the Chosen One.

The New Republic Era (The Mandalorian and Spin-Offs)

The Mandalorian (Series)

This series takes place a few years after the Empire’s collapse. The Mandalorian revolves around the bounty hunter Din Djarin and his struggle to save Grogu (aka Baby Yoda). The series gives us a glimpse of what the galaxy looks like in those relatively lawless days as the New Republic tries to bring order.

The Book of Boba Fett (Series)

This Mandalorian spin-off tells the story of Boba Fett’s ascension as the new Daimyo of Tatooine. The series follows the adventures of the legendary Boba Fett and his attempts to gain power, revenge, and a legacy in the criminal underworld.

Ahsoka (Series)

Set after the events of Rebels and The Mandalorian, this series follows Ahsoka Tano as she looks for Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger. It ties in elements from the animated series into live-action form.

Skeleton Crew (Upcoming Series)

While little is known about the series, it will follow a group of kids who get lost in the galaxy during this period.

The Rise of the First Order (Sequel Trilogy)

Episode VII

The Force Awakens reveals a new threat that rises to the galaxy: The First Order. As the Resistance fights this faction of the Empire, a scavenger named Rey with mysterious Force powers comes to his own. The appearances of Han Solo and Leia Organa anchor this new generation in nostalgia.

Episode VIII

In “The Last Jedi”,  Luke Skywalker, who was once a known Jedi Master, is shown as a broken character filled with regrets. This episode elaborates on the theme of loss, recovery, and the everlasting symbol of faith. Apart from this storyline, there’s another of Kylo Ren struggling with his inner conflicts like never before.

Episode IX

In “The Rise of Skywalker”, Emperor Palpatine returns and reveals himself as the puppet master behind Snoke and the First Order. Moreover, Rey’s true heritage is also revealed in this episode, and there’s one final battle to defeat the Sith and continue the legacy of the Jedi Order.

The Star Wars Future

The Star Wars timeline is a symbol of enduring magic. From the golden age to the dark time of the Empire, each film and series adds depth to the narrative. Not just this, there are many upcoming projects like The Acolyte, Ahsoka, and new films announced by Lucasfilm; the Star Wars timeline continues to expand across generations. Whether it’s wielding a custom lightsaber or fighting the forces of darkness, the galaxy far, far away remains a place where the light and dark sides of the Force eternally collide.
